Born in Lisbon (Portugal), official documents give her date of birth as July 23, though she used to say that her birthday was on July 1st. She was known as the Queen of Fado. Her most successful song is "Canção do Mar" which is a huge hit around the world untill now! The song has been covered many times by different singers. Amalia Rodruguez died on October 6 1999, at the age of 79 in her home in Lisbon. Portugal's goverment promptly declared a period of national mourning. Her house is now a museum. She is now buried at the National Pantheon alongside other Portuguese notables.
