Sirusho : I'm not affraid of any song at Eurovision!

By Krikor K.

We were together on a Eurovision party on Thursday. I met her again on Saturday ,this time, to take an interview from her. One of the most beautiful singers of the world, Sirusho answered all my questions without quiting smiling and being so kind and friendly. Let's find out what Sirusho, the Armenian singer of Eurovision 2008, told to "Krik!Music Corner"...

Krikor = Sirusho, how did come you to be the singer of Armenia this year? Sirusho = Well, my name was one of the bookmarkers' favourite for the Eurovision Song Contest since Armenia's first entry ever, back in 2006. This year, I finally been choosen and I'm really happy for that.

Krikor = What feelings did you have when "Qele-Qele" was voted as the entry of Armenia?
Sirusho = Despite the fact that I was involved in all my 4 song as a lyristic, I was really exited with "Qele-Qele"'s victory because this certain song is my top favourite.

Krikor = Was your own desire for the lyrics to be half Armenian and half English?

Sirusho = Yes, absolutelly.

Krikor = Where have you been so far during your promo tour?

Sirusho = Well, I have been in many countries... Shall we count together? I have been in Georgia, Russia, Czech Republic, Germany, France, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, United Kingdom and Greece. So? How many countries Krikor?

Krikor = It's 10 countries! Wow! Aren't you tired?

Sirusho = I so am, but you can't imagine how wonderful time I spent during this promo tour. It's so nice meeting people who express their love to you, wishing you "Good Luck"... it's magical feeling...

Krikor = Nice! Which of the songs of Eurovision 2008 do you like and affraid of?
Sirusho = There are so many I like... but I prefer not to tell you because it's unfair in my opinion. Well, I'm not affraid of any song... I so believe in "Qele-Qele" and myself...

Krikor = You're the 1st female Armenian artist in Eurovision. Does this fact make
you more anxious?

Sirusho = Well, it's something...but still not! I'm not affraid of anything...

Krikor = Ok Sirusho. I would like to thank you for this mini interview and wish you good luck in the contest!

Sirusho = Really thank you Krikor! Many kisses!

By Krikor K.

Eurovision Song Contest 2008 just finished and Russia crowned as the big winner. Dima Bilan's ballad entitled "Believe" managed to collect 272 points from the televoting of 43 countries.
Dima Bilan was the bookmarkers' favorite and his victory was kind of expectable.

Russians are celebrating their victory

The second place earned Ukraine and the unique Ani Lorak with the best 2008 song "Shady Lady". Ani Lorak's stage performance was really unique and really wonderful making everyone believe that she's the winner.

Ani Lorak from Ukraine

In the 3rd place we meet Greece and Kalomoira's "Secret Combination". The 23 year old girl from Greece, gave her best during the stage performance of her song reaching the 3rd place, although the Greeks were expecting the 1st place!!

Kalomira from Greece made a wonderful show!

Sirusho from Armenia won the 4th place of the final scoreboard making Armenia really proud. The "Qele-Qele" singer, to be honest, was as good as in the Semi Final though she kept the title of one of the "most favourite" 2008 entries in the contest. Congratulations Armenia!

Maybe Eurovision 2008's hottest girl : Sirusho from Armenia!

The top 5 closed with the Norwegian entry. The absolutelly sweet Maria Haukaas and the song "Hold on, be strong" managed to reach the very proud 5th place. Maria was really cool on stage performing a great pop/ballad.

Sweet Maria Haukaas brought Norway to the 5th place!

The host Serbia ended 6th and Jelena Tomasevic was simply fantastic during her performance on "Oro". Wonderful dress, good looking hair and make up, very nice song and a very nice voice could be the winner but they finally managed to give to the country the 6th place!

Yes Im Hay hoghits (From my Armenian soul)
Yeka berem (I came to bring)
Hoveh sareri (the wind of the mountains)
Louyseh arevi (the light of the sun)

You wanna be with me
You think and dream of me

Instead of watching me
You should be reaching me
Come qele, move qele (Come, let's go, move, let's go)

Qele, qele (Let's go, let's go)
Qele, qele (Let's go, let's go)
Qele, qele (Let's go, let's go)
Qele (let's go)

Time is reaching height
You should make it right
To end our fight
Just hold me tight

Hold me tight
Hold me tight
Qele... (Let's go)

You wanna be with me
You think and dream of me
Come qele, move qele (Come, let's go, move, let's go)

(Qe... qe... qe... qele) (Let's, let's, let's, let's go)

Qele, qele (Let's go, let's go)
Qele, qele (Let's go, let's go)
Qele, qele (Let's go, let's go)

You should make it right
To end our fight
Just hold me tight

With no further information than the versifier's name which is Natalia Germanou, the Armenian pop star Sirusho, mostly known for her song "Qele-Qele" will soon release a song in greek under the name "Erotas ksafnikos" which means "Sudden love".

"Krik! Music Corner" gives you the chance to listen to the song via youtube. Maybe it's not in a perfect quality but it's a good chance to listen to it some days before its official circulation.

Eurovision 2008 : 1st Semi Final done!

By Krikor K.

On Tuesday 20 of May 2008, inside "Belgrade Arena" of Belgrade (Serbia) took part the very first Semi Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2008. Presenters were Jovana Janković and Željko Joksimović. 19 countries competed on the Semi Final. Montenegro appeared first on stage and the last song was the Greek one!
The show generally had sound and light problems as many fans and many of the singers told after the contest, but above all they all enjoyed it because it was something that people expect one year now...
People seemed to be enjoyed more with the Greek entry. By the moment Kalomoira, the greek singer, was on stage, the people didn't quit shouting her name. Also during the solo dancing of her, people was acting like crazy for her.
Dima Bilan was one of the bookmarkers' top and everyone expected a lot to see from him and the Russian delegation. Though, many people stayed really unsurprised admiting that it wasn't the thing they were expecting to see from Russia.
Poland and Norway, with their balladas, managed to make the big suprise. Also Bosnia - Herzegovina had many fans.
Sirusho from Armenia made a really cool stage performance leaving the people inside the stadium exited!
Let's see which of the 19 countries made it to the final...

The 10 qualifying countries are (in random order):

1. Romania (No 1 to perform on Final)
2. Armenia (No 5 to perform on Final)
3. Bosnia - Herzegovina (No 6 to perform on Final)
4. Israel (No 7 to perform on Final)
5. Finland (No 8 to perform on Final)
6. Poland (No 10 to perform on Final)
7. Azerbaijan (No 20 to perform on Final)
8. Greece (No 21 to perform on Final)
9. Russia (No 24 to perform on Final)
10. Norway (No 25 to perform on Final)

As a tiny surprise, Slovenia, Ireland and Andorra didn't make it finally to the Final of the contest.
Rumors say that Greece won the 1st Semi Final of Eurovision 2008 but yet we don't know a thing for sure. The total results will be announced after the Final of the contest.

Stay tuned at "Krik! Music Corner" to read the final news of the 2nd Semi Final and to see which 10 countries passed to the Grand Final of Saturday...

System of A Down interested in Eurovision 2009

By Krikor K.
After Armenia received its best result ever this year with Sirusho, the world-famous rock band System of a Down shown a keen interest in representing the country in Russia next year. However, the soloist of the American band, Serj Tankian, has openly stated in a recent visit in Finland that this will be under one condition: if they will be able to use Eurovision as a way to make the much-debated Armenian Genocide issue known. "Esc would be an excellent way to make this theme known. We must seriously think of this." said Tankian in response to a question posed by Finnish News Agency.

System of a Down is very politically active and are noted for the liberal political views expressed in their songs, tackling myriad subjects including the War on Drugs, religion, drug use, and especially censorship. They have actively campaigned to get Turkey to recognize the controversial Armenian Genocide and the subject is often-tackled in their songs. They are also a part of the Axis of Justice, a non-profit political activist organization fighting for recognition of the polemical issue, believed to have taken part in the early 20th century. Ironically, the band has many Turkish fans as well.

Previously similar themes have been tried at Eurovision with mixed success. In 1976 Greece sent the song Panaghia mou, Panaghia mou about the invasion of Cyprus, in 1993 Bosnia-Herzegovina performed Sva bol svijeta about the war in the region, and it is also believed by experts that the 1996 United Kingdom entry Ohh Ahh Just a little bit also has a hidden message about genocide.

With previous song titles such as Violent Pornography, This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm On This Song, Peephole and Fuck the System, System of a Down would perhaps be censored by the EBU rule about bad language that previously forced Silvia Night to officially change the lyrics of her song, while the EBU would probably choose to believe the political message was a reference to ancient Armenian bedtime stories or an ending relationship.

Eurovision 2009 Corner : Part 4

By Krikor K.

It's the 4th day of the rehearsals in Moscow. The last 10 countries of the 2nd Semi Final are going to make their rehearsals today starting with Slovenia, which will perform on number 10 during the 2nd Semi Final evening...

10. Slovenia
Song : Love Symphony
Artists : Quartissimo ft. Martina Majerle
One of the best backrounds it is set for the Slovenian performance : all stage is covers by black and red colours while notes and violin strings are being shown from the LED screens. The 4 musicians are standing inside golden mirrors around the central one behind of which is hiding the main singer, Martina. The mirrors are planned to be covered by paper during the Semi Final's night but today they were not. Two things changes : Martina starts singing at the 1 minute of the song (at the studio version she starts singing later than the first minute) and the team is not yet sure if the song is going to be sang in English or in Slovenian! Musicians, after their appearance on the stage, are moving around the singer. Martina's voice is clear and totally ok but she doesn't move at all, something which is necessary in such a strong song... Generally it's a great and strong performance...

11. Hungary
Song : Dance with me
Artist : Adok Zoli

Adok is on stage promising for a great dance show as his original occupation is dancer! He needs more work on singing the song "Dance with me" but his movements are great. The backround is in dark colours and there are some white squares and different other shapes. On the ring of the stage there is the title of his entry. Adok is joined on stage by three female dancers and two very good singers as backing vocalists...

12. Azerbaijan

Song : Always
Artist : AySel ft. Arash

Azerbaijan is on stage for its 1st rehearsal. Worldwide famous singer from Iran Arash is one of the singers of the entry. With him on stage is AySel, the young singer who was supposed at first to represent the country on her own! The stage is full of flames and drums via the LED screens. The two singers are on a platform which has many different heights so the two singers can move on them and dance. At the beginning of the song moving their hands to the rhythm of the song and touching each other's hand just before the first chorus. A dancer who is dancing and waving a pink piece of fabric opens the entry while the two singers are singing the first notes... AySel's style on stage reminds a lot of Sirusho who last year represented Armenia! Arash is wearing a costume and a pair of jeans. Three dancers are dancing around the two singers who also do some movements based on the rhythm of "Always"! A male singer is at the back doing the backing singer. Arash and AySel both need some more pratice on the vocal part but generally the whole performance is ok...

13. Greece

Song : This is our night

Artist : Sakis Rouvas

Sakis Rouvas is on stage for his first rehearsal. The stage is colourful and neon lights are all over it. In the middle of the stage's ring is written the title of the song with pink neon lights. Sakis and his 4 dancers are walking on a big catwalk platform. A bit before the refrain Sakis is on his own on the platform and at the refrain he is jumbing high and then getting off the platform dancing with his dancers on the stage. Alex Panayi is the backing vocalists who is doing a great job. The choreography is good but Sakis needs more practice on singing. He may be win the contest...

14. Lithuania

Song : Love
Artist : Sasha Son

Sasha is sitting in a piano in the beggining of the song and has three backing vocalist. Sasha is wearing jeans, a whitle t-shirt and a hat which refers to and r'n'b style, though it's not sure what he is going to wear during the Semi Final's evening. Sasha sang in english but neither the language is yet sure, as he may sing the song "Love" in Lithuanian or even Russian. The stage is covered by dark and light blue lights and the backround shows a piano. The whole performance is based on the beautiful melody of the song...

15. Moldova

Song : Hora din Moldova

Artist : Nelly Ciobanu
Nelly Ciobanu is on stage joined by one male singer as backing vocalists and other four male dancers! The stage is all in red colours. The LED screens show some ethnic shapes which reminds the backround of Georgia's entry back at the Eurovision 2007... Nelly is good at the vocal part and the whole performance on stage is very joyful...

16. Albania

Song : Carry me in your dreams

Artist : Kejsi Tola

Much more better than the Albanian National Final, Kejsi Tola is on stage singing her song in english. The stage is colourful but basicly red colour is used more. Kejsi is doing her best to dance during the song (her choreographer is Juliano who also danced with Kalomira last year) and as fas as the vocal part she is very good.

17. Ukraine

Song : Be my Valentine

Artist : Svetlana Loboda

Svetlana is on stage to rehearse her song! It's probably the sexiest moment of this year's contest! There are three metalic wheels on stage, also famous as the "Hell Machine", in which Svetlana is dancing using sexy movements. As fas as the vocal part, Svetland needs a lot of work because she seems to be tired from the dancing. With her there are three half-naked dancers and two female backing vocalists. The stage is full of blue and red lights. Highlight : on the ring of the stage there is Svetlana's photo!! If she finally sing well, she may have many chances to be on top5.

18. Estonia

Song : Raendajad
Artist : Urban Symphony

The stage is all in dark blue and falling stars are being shown via the LED screens. The band's main singer is on her own on stage at the beggining. The rest members are being shown behind of the big screens during the first chorus. There is also smoke on the stage which suits perfectly with the song. The girls are absolutely great as fas as the vocal part. They are not moving that much but this ain't seem to be a problem as the atmosphaire of the song does not need many movements. It is worth to mention that the Estonian entry is high at the bets...

19. The Netherlands
Song : Shine
Artist : De Toppers
De Toppers are on stage wearing black costumes with silver details which make them "shine"! They are also have lights on their hands just like Alenka Gotar (Slovenian entry at the ESC 2007). With them they have three female singers as backing vocalists who are wearing white dresses. The stage is all in blue lightings at the beggining but then there are many colourful lights around it! The three female backing vocalists hold some dj descks pretending to play music and the three members of the band are waving their hands on the rhythm of the song during the chorus!

The Netherlands were the last country to rehearse today...
